SUMMARY:Föredrag: Processionsvagnen
LOCATION:Östasiastiska museet\, Tyghusplan\, 111 49 Stockholm
DESCRIPTION:In this lecture\, Helga Janse\, curator for Asia at Världsku
lturmuseerna\, discusses one of the museums’ treasures: an enormous Jap
anese processional float.\n\nA project is currently under way to examine
and conserve the float\, with the aim of one day putting it on display fo
r visitors again. The float was purchased in Tokyo in 1884 by Hjalmar Sto
lpe during Vanadisexpeditionen and shipped to Sweden in no fewer than 25
crates.\n\nBy searching historical sources\, we have now found new clues
about which festival the float was used in. The source material also offe
rs a fascinating insight into Japanese society during the turbulent years
  around the early Meiji period.
