SUMMARY:Capri – sirenernas ö?
LOCATION:Medelhavsmuseet\, Fredsgatan 2\, 111 52 Stockholm
DESCRIPTION:Capri is sometimes called the ‘island of the sirens’. Eve
n in antiquity\, the island’s dramatic cliffs were associated with the
creatures whose song lured sailors to their doom. Homer never says what t
he sirens looked like.\n\nIn early Greek art\, they were depicted as wome
n\, and sometimes men\, with birds’ bodies. In Roman sculpture\, they w
ere portrayed as women making music\, and during the Middle Ages they wer
e believed to be mermaids.\n\nThis evening’s lecture explores how siren
s have evolved in art and literature from antiquity to the present day.\n
\nAllan Klynne\, PhD in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History\, autho
 r and lecturer.
