SUMMARY:Global bar: Frukostsamtal
LOCATION:Medelhavsmuseet\, Fredsgatan 2\, 111 52 Stockholm
DESCRIPTION:Breakfast talk: Does the world care about the Refugee Convent
 ion?\n\nCoffee will be served from 8.30 am.\n\nIn 2026\, the UN Refugee C
onvention turns 75. At the same time\, aid is increasingly being redirect
ed towards border surveillance and internal security. Do we still care ab
out refugees’ rights? And does the Convention have a future?\n\nThe UN
Refugee Convention was adopted after the Second World War and still forms
the basis of international refugee protection today. The Convention defi
nes who is a refugee and establishes a central principle: no one may be s
ent back to a country where their life or freedom is threatened.\n\nAt th
e same time\, nearly 120 million people are now displaced around the worl
 d. This year alone\, more than 2\,300 people are estimated to have drowne
 d while trying to cross the Mediterranean.\n\nIn June 2026\, the EU’s n
ew migration and asylum legislation (the “Pact”) began to be applied\
, with joint border controls\, faster asylum processing and returns follo
 wing refusals.\n\nThe EU’s upcoming long-term budget (2028–2034) is c
urrently under discussion. The European Commission wants to significantly
increase funding for migration\, border control and internal security\,
while cooperation with countries outside the EU is increasingly clearly l
inked to returns and readmission. The Commission’s proposal means that
migration and refugee initiatives are to be funded both through the EU’
s internal budget and through the foreign affairs and development instrum
 ent Global Europe…
