DESCRIPTION:The year is 1898\, and we follow Amanda Aaltonen\, a bold wom
an who has refused to submit to the miserable fate predetermined for her
as a poor woman. Amanda has gone out into the world in search of happines
s and lived an exciting\, decadent life. Once a month\, however\, she goe
s “mad”: she suffers from severe period pains. As punishment for defy
ing society’s norms\, she is confined to the island of Själö and depr
ived of what matters most of all—her freedom.\n\nAmanda sees her stay o
n the beautiful island as very short-term\, but as the days pass and she
gets to know the different women on the island\, she begins to realise th
at her stay may be a little longer than planned.\n\nAlli Haapasalo previo
usly directed Girl Picture (Tytöt tytöt tytöt\, 2022)\, which won\, am
ong other awards\, the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and t
he Best Film award at the 2023 Jussi Awards. The film Berätta för alla
is based on the novel “Yön kantaja” by Katja Kallio.\n\nSjälö is a
historic island in the Turku Archipelago. After serving as a leprosy hos
pital\, mentally ill patients were placed on the island in the 18th centu
ry. In 1889\, all the male patients were moved away\, after which only fe
male patients were cared for there. The site served as a mental hospital
and asylum for women until 1962. Since then\, the University of Turku’s
research institute has been based on the island\, conducting research in
 to the marine ecosystem.
