 story\, and his visual language often has a painterly quality. Focusing o
 n the so-called Depression Trilogy – Antichrist (2009)\, Melancholia (2
 011) and Nymphomaniac (2013) – writer and literary critic Sara Abdollah
 i discusses how von Trier uses art to portray depression\, melancholy and
  doom.\n\nIn Antichrist\, we encounter moods that evoke Russian landscape
  painting\, while Nymphomaniac contains echoes of Balthus’s visual worl
 d. Particular attention is paid to Melancholia\, where Pieter Bruegel’s
  winter landscape goes up in flames and Kirsten Dunst’s Justine floats 
 in the water like John Everett Millais’s Ophelia.\n\nThis talk explores
  the aesthetics of doom\, complex portrayals of women\, and how Lars von 
 Trier transforms what is frightening and sorrowful into images of singula
