Ways on ways

What happens when a seemingly simple movement offers endless ways of being placed in context? In the dance work Ways on ways, choreographer Björn Säfsten turns his attention to two of dance’s most fundamental elements: walking and repetition.

Together with an ensemble of eight dancers, the stage is transformed into a place where the eye is deceived and patterns constantly change shape. They create a tapestry of movement, like a collective ritual in which the group and the whole take precedence over the individual.

By isolating the parameters of walking – its weight, direction and precise rhythm – the work explores how small shifts can break up an established structure and create an entirely new logic. Seemingly simple spatial geometries are combined with different walking patterns, creating elusive effects from one of the most basic human movements.

How many times can we repeat an action before it loses its original meaning? And when does repetition itself become a map of new interpretations? Through close interaction between the eight bodies, walking becomes the starting point for a bodily, mathematical chorus in which every step holds another possible path.
