Nationalmuseum

Sweden’s leading museum of art and design.

Nationalmuseum in Stockholm is centrally located overlooking Kungliga Slottet and is the country’s leading museum of art and design. The museum opened in 1866 and was one of the first public art museums in the world. It houses extensive collections of paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, decorative arts and design from the 16th to the 20th century inclusive. Yet the striking collections are not the only thing that leaves visitors awestruck. The breathtaking building, in the Florentine and Venetian Renaissance styles, is a work of art in itself. Since 2013, Nationalmuseum on Blaiseholmen has been undergoing extensive renovation. It is scheduled to reopen in 2018. Until then, the collections can be viewed at temporary premises at Konstakademien (Fredsgatan 12) and Kulturhuset Stadsteatern (Sergels Torg).
