Medeltidsmuseet

Get to know medieval Stockholm!

A garage construction project next to the old Riksdagshuset in the late 1970s became something much more. Archaeological investigations were carried out before construction began, uncovering an extraordinary treasure: parts of the medieval city wall, a cemetery and a secret passage to the palace. Today, Medeltidsmuseet has been built around these archaeological remains. Here, visitors can explore Stockholm’s origins, along with the stories, people and life of the Middle Ages. Learn how houses were built, see a reconstruction of Galgbacken, discover the city’s founder Birger Jarl and view a ship from the 16th century.
