Ghost in the Cell

ARE THERE ANY NICE PRISONERS HERE? In an Indonesian prison, the inmates live in constant fear of both the guards and one another.

When a mysterious new prisoner arrives, an invisible supernatural entity begins brutally murdering inmates and arranging their bodies as bloody works of art. The entity targets the prisoners with the most negative auras, so the inmates start competing to be nice – but in a system built on injustice, being nice is almost impossible.

Joko Anwar (Satan’s Slaves, Modus Anomali) delivers a socially critical horror film that became a box office hit in Indonesia and had its international premiere at Berlinale 2026. Anwar uses the ghost as a metaphor for corruption and systemic decay. Joko Anwar’s Ghost in the Cell is a wild, blood-spattered and unexpectedly funny mix of horror, comedy and satire that both entertains and provokes thought. Anwar proves once again that Indonesian genre cinema is truly world-class.

If you’re not nice, you’ll become a bloody sculpture!
