Livrustkammaren, Stockholm
Två kröningar och en abdikation
TVÅ KRÖNINGAR OCH EN ABDIKATION
Splendour, pomp and luxury from Queen Christina to Charles X Gustav
Queen Christina’s coronation in 1650 was a lavish display of Sweden’s new status as a great power. After three years of preparations, Stockholm witnessed a magnificent spectacle followed by weeks of festivities. To widespread surprise, the then 27-year-old queen chose to relinquish power as early as 1654. An entirely new ritual had to be devised for her abdication at Uppsala slott, immediately followed by the coronation of her successor, Charles X Gustav, in the cathedral. These three important events are explored in two talks, with a short film between them about some of the unique objects preserved at Livrustkammaren. This full evening exploring the transition from the Vasa era to the Carolean era is organised in collaboration with Karolinska förbundet.
