Fauré: Requiem
Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in D minor, Op. 48 was composed between 1887 and 1890 and is one of his best-loved works. Written for soprano and baritone soloists, mixed choir, orchestra and organ, it consists of seven movements in its final form.
The work is known for its gentle, meditative and consoling character, which sets it apart from more dramatic requiems such as those by Mozart or Verdi.
Fauré himself described the work as “a lullaby about death”, with a focus on eternal rest and peace rather than fear of Judgement Day.
