Winner of the Palme d’Or at Cannes 2026 Romanian-Norwegian couple Mihai and Lisbeth Gheorghiu move to Norway with their children after Mihai’s parents pass away, to be closer to Lisbeth’s family, who share the couple’s deep religious convictions.

They soon develop a close relationship with their neighbours, the Halberg family. Mats Halberg works as the headteacher at the nearby school, while his wife Mia has left her job as a lawyer to care for Mats’s ageing father. As the friendship between the neighbours deepens, the Halbergs’ rebellious teenage daughter Rakel begins to change, and when the Gheorghius’ daughter Elia suddenly turns up at school with bruises, suspicions arise about what is really happening behind closed doors. Soon the two families are pitted against each other in an escalating conflict over parenting, faith and freedom.
