Throughout Stockholm’s nearly 800-year history, the city has been ravaged by devastating fires time and again. People depended on fire while also fearing its power.

This is the story of the most spectacular fires in Stockholm’s history. But it is also about how, over the centuries, Stockholmers have fought the “red rooster” – a traditional name for fire – in various ways. It tells of fire watchmen, the tolling of fire alarm bells and how Stockholm finally got its professional fire brigade, which had its “baptism of fire” when Eldkvarn burned.
