Sergel

Nationalmuseum showed a much-appreciated exhibition during the spring and summer about the sculptor and draughtsman Johan Tobias Sergel (1740–1814).

Sergel was a central figure in Swedish art in the late 18th century, but is also considered one of the most important sculptors of his time internationally and was compared with Michelangelo.

He left behind a large number of drawings depicting everyday life, family, friends and risqué scenes. Staffan Redin gives an insightful account of Sergel and his contemporaries. Anders Hanser has edited the film and added appropriate music.

The supporting film is Stolta stad – about three other central figures in 18th-century Stockholm: the troubadour Bellman, the architect Adelcrantz and the artist Sevenbom.
