Dracula
Original title: Bram Stoker's Dracula Director: Francis Ford Coppola
Cast: Gary Oldman, Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Waits
Francis Ford Coppola pulls out all the stops as he breathes life into Bram Stoker's classic horror novel. In a punchy prologue set in the 15th century, the impaling prince Vlad (an explosive Gary Oldman) is so distraught over his wife's suicide that he curses God and is himself punished with eternal life as a vampire.
Several hundred years later, Keanu Reeves's nervous lawyer is summoned to a castle in Transylvania to arrange a property purchase in London for the prince, now a vampire known as Count Dracula. When the bloodsucker spots a photograph of the young lawyer's fiancée, an obsession develops with bloody consequences.
Audiences flocked to the Freudian visual fireworks and unrestrained lust of this horror-romance extravaganza. The film became Coppola's most successful since Gudfadern (1972) and won Oscars for Best Costume Design, Make-up and Sound Effects.
Bram Stoker's Dracula. 1992, USA, 2 hours 8 minutes, English with Swedish subtitles, 35 mm, ages 15 and over. Screening material supplied by Svenska filminstitutet.
