“…more than enough to make up for an entire lifetime of anxiety and boredom” — Måns Wadensjö in Svenska Dagbladet
The absurdist and playwright Samuel Beckett forbade women from performing in his legendary play I väntan på Godot. His reasoning was that the play portrays a specifically male experience of existential waiting, and that a female cast risks shifting the play's focus to a discussion about women, rather than humanity.
His estate has continued to enforce this through copyright, and over the years several productions featuring female actors have been stopped.
It's neither interesting nor fun to talk about; it's just the way it is. And I have accepted it, I have accepted it, I have accepted it.
People just have to die for the theatre. They die for everything else, so why not the theatre? Die for it. Isn't it beautiful? Wouldn't you die for something beautiful?
EXIL I HELLO KITTY CITY premiered at Teater Brunnsgatan Fyra in autumn 2025, where every performance sold out. In summer 2026, the production was also performed at Parkteatern, Under eken in Galärparken, on 24 and 25 July. It now returns to Brunnsgatan Fyra for six performances.
EXIL I HELLO KITTY CITY is independent theatre company HJÄRTER FEM's third production at Teater Brunnsgatan Fyra. They previously staged VINTERPJÄSEN (2024) and GREKPJÄSEN – Berättelsen om Oidipus (2025) here. Both productions sold out and received critical acclaim.
“Vinterpjäsen shows how good things can be when a new generation is given a chance. It's a fast-paced, funny production about the eternal longing for something that gives life meaning,” wrote Lisa Boda in DN.
“Exil i Hello Kitty City” is a guest production at Teater Brunnsgatan Fyra.
