Martial Canterel is a post-wave project by Sean McBride of Xeno & Oaklander. With cold synth sounds and a sense of alienation, the project draws on the cold wave movement of the 1970s. McBride stays close to the genre’s original sound, avoiding sampling and overdubbing in favour of analogue synthesisers and multi-step sequencers. McBride was one of the early artists in the cold wave revival. He played his first gig in 2002 and released his first cassette, Sister Age, in 2004. Over the following years, labels such as Xanten, Chondritic Sound, Genetic Music and Tarantulla Productions released albums including Confusing Outsides (2005), Drilling Backwards (2006), Austerton (2007) and Cruelty Reigns Through the Ages (2008). Ahead of the singles You Today and Occupy These Terms in 2010, McBride moved Martial Canterel to Wierd Records, one of the most significant labels in the then-emerging post-wave scene. The album You Today, which explored the symbiotic relationship between isolation and technology, came out in early 2011. In 2013, Electric Voice Records released Navigations, a collection of “forgotten songs, sketches and unfinished works”. The following year, Gyors, Lassú was released on Dais. In 2017, Medical Records released two further Navigations albums, as well as a box set containing all three volumes. Later that year, the full-length album Lost at Sea came out on Dais.
