Brahms: Requiem
Ein deutsches Requiem, op. 45, was composed between 1865 and 1868. It is scored for soprano and baritone soloists, large choir and orchestra.
Rather than using the Latin texts of the Catholic Mass for the Dead, Brahms selected biblical texts in German from the Luther Bible himself. The result is a work that does not follow the traditional requiem structure, but instead forms a meditation on consolation and compassion.
Brahms himself said that he could just as well have called it “Ein menschliches Requiem” – a human requiem.
