Azvá – Månens tårar
An evocative piece of musical theatre about Roma slavery, resistance and the traces of a suppressed history.
Through Roma voices, past and present are woven together in a theatrical ritual in which the moon watches over what must not be forgotten. Azvá – Månens tårar is a powerful musical theatre production by Arthem – Romska Teatern, in which music, testimonies and folk mysticism portray one of Europe's most suppressed chapters: the enslavement of Roma people, an oppression that lasted for over five hundred years.
With the moon as a guide – a silent witness, a conscience and a commentator – past and present are woven together in a story of bondage, memory and survival. On stage, we meet three generations of women whose lives have been shaped by the conditions of slavery. Through their voices, songs and actions, a poetic yet uncompromising drama emerges about inheritance, intergenerational trauma and the struggle for dignity. The performance moves between magic, dark realism and satire, casting a critical eye on historical ignorance, contemporary prejudices and the structures that still shape Roma people's lives in Europe today.
Azvá means tears in Romani. But Azvá is also the child who was born into bondage but refused to disappear from history. A child who became a witness, a bearer of memory and a survivor. When the moon weeps, she remembers her tears, she remembers Azvá.
