FN-dagen – Bortglömda konflikter
Whose crises are seen, and whose are forgotten? On United Nations Day, we invite you to an afternoon exploring conflict, solidarity, media attention and paths to peace.
Together with journalists, researchers, human rights advocates and voices from civil society, we examine why some crises make headlines around the world while others remain almost invisible.
The day opens with a keynote conversation about the UN’s role at a time of growing conflict, and the kind of leadership needed in a troubled world. This is followed by talks drawing on recent experience from, among other things, Haiti, global health, humanitarian efforts and international reporting.
A joint panel discussion will address questions such as: What determines which conflicts receive media attention? How does that attention affect opportunities for support and peacebuilding? And how can international efforts strengthen, rather than replace, the expertise already present among people on the ground?
The afternoon concludes with an open workshop where the audience and contributors reflect together on the significance of the UN today and the questions about the future that require our shared commitment.
Participants include an Africa correspondent, a researcher in global health, a representative of civil society and a steward of Dag Hammarskjöld’s legacy. Together, they offer different perspectives on the conflicts, crises and opportunities for peace of our time.
Participants:
Mona Ismail Jama is a journalist and Africa correspondent at Sveriges Radio.
Martina Gustavsson is a researcher in global health (formerly a doctoral student, now, according to your information, a postdoctoral researcher) and has worked for Läkare Utan Gränser.
Rachell Berry is chair of the Haiti Committee in Sweden and thus represents civil society and voluntary international engagement.
Caroline Hammarskjöld represents Hammarskjöld Society and stewards Dag Hammarskjöld’s legacy, rather than being a journalist or researcher. She contributes a perspective on the UN, diplomacy and international leadership. (This part is based on the information you provided in the programme.)
