Kollektivet Livet, Stockholm
Svart Katt + Snake
Svart Katt are coming to Kollektivet Livet on 24 September!!! Support: Snake
Fuck, maybe it’s worth keeping punk alive a little longer? At least as long as Svart Katt keep churning out songs with Jay Reatard-style downstrokes, setting the feeling of vibrating tarmac to music, with lyrics about hanging around, skating and listening to the radio.
Like a kind of melancholy-punk Call me by Your Name, but instead of sun-drenched Italy and cum-filled peaches, it paints a picture of a Sweden that has disappeared, a simpler existence. Maybe it’s a small-town perspective, maybe some big-city suburb. Who cares? Once again, Svart Katt manage to describe a universal reality: a desperate hope of holding on to something that you, I and everyone know is impossible.
Through a recurring “you and me”, Svart Katt put into words a bygone time, a simpler existence where perhaps everything is really about a lost sense of togetherness. Right at the front of the barricade, fist in the air, in a desperate attempt to make the memories stay.
According to the band themselves, everything is new on their new album “Tills ingen längre minns”. Sure, they’ve developed their sound and thrown in some extra keyboards and distorted synths, contrasted with a delicate clarinet. BUT what’s impressive is how deeply they’ve grounded themselves in their themes. Every song is a postcard from decades-old friendships — or was it only a month ago? It’s hazy yet razor-sharp, in a way no other band in Sweden manages when writing rock music.
Snake
SNAKE is the band its members wished they’d had when they were young, insecure and confused. Instead, they plucked up the courage sometime in their thirties, around 2014, and Snake was born: "we pretended we could play grand rock and wild punk, and then we did."
Their music is characterised by thunderous, monotonous drums (Tess Törner Kaplanis), dreamy and primal synths, astral theremin tones (Madeleine Frankie) and simple guitar melodies swathed in distortion, echo and expressive vocals (Maria Johansson). The lyrics revolve around toxic relationships, insecurity, love and self-doubt, getting lost and sometimes finding your way, the shabbiness and splendour of life.
