Systrarna på Sophiahemmet

Author Ruth Kvarnström-Jones is now releasing the third book in the Stockholms pärlor series. Hear her talk about the women who helped establish Sophiahemmet in the late 19th century.

In 1883, Queen Sophia summons her closest confidants to a secret meeting at Kungliga slottet. She has a bold vision of founding a nursing school in the spirit of Florence Nightingale.

Sophiahemmet is eventually established, becoming a place where women have the chance to take on greater responsibility during a period of major social and medical change. Ruth Kvarnström-Jones tells the story of how Sophiahemmet takes shape in the late 19th century and how the nurses working there both pave the way for a new profession and succeed in making their mark in a man's world.
