Horse Lords formed in Baltimore in 2010, emerging from the experimental collective Teeth Mountain. They began as a trio comprising drummer Sam Haberman, guitarist Owen Gardner and bassist Max Eilbacher, but soon added alto saxophonist Andrew Bernstein to complete the permanent line-up. Although Horse Lords have their roots in Baltimore’s fertile noise and leftfield rock scene – a storied environment for artists and eccentrics that has nurtured many influential outsider bands (Lungfish, Matmos) – their musical approach is more varied than the pointillistic rhythms of their instrumental electric rock might suggest.
Over sixteen years of extensive touring, Horse Lords have released ten studio, live and collaborative albums, alongside a split EP with fellow Baltimore band Lower Dens, a number of singles and tracks on compilations. For RVNG’s FRKWYS series, the band collaborated with Berlin-based composer Arnold Dreyblatt, a former student of La Monte Young and Pauline Oliveros, whose chamber music in just intonation was an important part of the post-Fluxus scene in downtown New York.
With three of the four members relocating to Germany from 2021 onwards, along with opportunities for further creative exploration and performances – including at Moers Festival (with an eleven-piece line-up interpreting both Julius Eastman’s music and their own) – the band’s cross-disciplinary music was poised to take exciting new directions. The band observe: “We are always trying to find a balance between working within the quartet’s limitations and pushing them.
