Yttling Jazz
Yttling Jazz, who are soon to begin their weeks as house band on SVT’s På spåret, are now extending their already lengthy tour with more dates early next year. The ensemble is adding a stop at Södra Teatern, among others, with a guest appearance by Lisa Nilsson.
Yttling Jazz’s album “Illegal Hit”, released last year, is one of the biggest Swedish jazz successes of recent years, and has also reached an audience beyond the genre. The record not only topped the Swedish jazz chart and won a Grammis in the Jazz of the Year category; the band have also played at Way Out West, supported Thåström at Dalhalla and toured extensively both in Sweden and internationally. Several of this autumn’s shows have already sold out, including two performances at Fasching in Stockholm.
Lisa Nilsson won a Grammis at this year’s awards ceremony in the Song of the Year category for her acclaimed album “Uteblivna vi”. One of Sweden’s most beloved voices, Lisa will also appear with Yttling Jazz on SVT’s På spåret on 23 October.
The Yttling Jazz ensemble playing in Stockholm is:
Björn Yttling, piano
Fredrik Rundqvist, drums
Dan Berglund, bass
Mattias Ståhl, vibraphone & harmonica
Jonas Kullhammar, saxophone
Fredrik Nordström, saxophone
More about Yttling Jazz
Yttling Jazz’s sold-out show at Slaktkyrkan during last year’s Stockholm Jazz Festival was praised by DN, which wrote: “Anyone who thinks jazz is boring or complicated would do well to drag themselves along to a Yttling Jazz concert.” That very concert, Yttling Jazz at Slaktkyrkan, is now available to watch on SVT Play.
Also notable are Yttling Jazz’s genre-crossing collaborations with artists such as Joshua Idehen (the version of “Illegal Hit” featuring him and Saturday, Monday provided the soundtrack to a much-discussed Apple campaign last summer featuring Brazilian football star Vinícius Júnior), Bobby Gillespie, Yukimi, The Tallest Man On Earth and El Perro del Mar. These collaborations were later brought together on the deluxe edition “Illegal Hit (Out of Bounds)”.
Alongside Yttling Jazz, Björn Yttling has this year worked as producer and songwriter on most of Lykke Li’s latest album, “The Afterparty”. And their 15-year-old single “I Follow Rivers” was used by Drake on this summer’s smash hit “Janice STFU”.
Many people probably think of Björn Yttling as a successful songwriter and producer in indie, pop and rock (Lykke Li, Peter Bjorn and John, Primal Scream, Chrissie Hynde, Shout Out Louds, among others), but the fact is that his career began in jazz, and he took private lessons from none other than Esbjörn Svensson.
“Illegal Hit”, the first Yttling Jazz record in 20 years, was described by Gaffa as an “atmospheric jazz triumph”.
