Taiko Fundamentals och Bon Daiko
Taiko Fundamentals – Workshop in Japanese drumming Curious about Taiko? Welcome to a 2.5-hour practical workshop where you can explore the fundamentals of Japanese drumming.
The workshop is held in English.
Taiko is about more than just hitting the drum. The sound is affected by how we stand and move, how we hold our bachi (drumsticks), how we use our arms and wrists, and how we release unnecessary tension.
During the workshop, we will explore:
How to hold and use bachi
Basic posture and body movements
How to use your arms and wrists naturally
Relaxation, control and how to create a good sound
Basic Taiko rhythms
Listening and playing together as a group
Beginners are very welcome. No previous experience of Taiko or drumming is required.
The fundamentals are also valuable for anyone who already has some experience of Taiko and would like to revisit basic movements and sounds.
Each participant will have their own Taiko drum throughout the workshop.
Bon Daiko - Workshop: Japanese festival dance & Taiko
Bon Daiko is the Taiko drumming traditionally played to accompany Bon Odori, a Japanese festival dance. Unlike a regular Taiko workshop, the aim here is not to play every rhythm perfectly. Instead, we focus on feeling the music, moving to the rhythm and enjoying playing Taiko as part of the festival atmosphere.
During the workshop, we use Tokyo Ondo, one of Japan’s best-known Bon Odori songs.
The workshop begins by learning the basic Bon Odori dance to Tokyo Ondo. By first experiencing the rhythm through the body, participants can then bring that same feeling to the drum.
