Båtgravarna i Gamla Uppsala
Two boat graves in Gamla Uppsala were excavated in early summer 2019. The finds revealed fascinating life stories and shed new light on the site's Viking Age history.
In 2019, two previously unknown boat graves dating from the 10th century were discovered at Prästgården in Gamla Uppsala. Two men with battle injuries had been laid to rest in these graves, together with weapons, some exceptionally fine objects and several animals.
Viking Age farmsteads have also been investigated in the eastern parts of Gamla Uppsala. In addition to several closely spaced farmsteads, more than 100 graves from the Late Iron Age were excavated, making this the largest burial-ground excavation in Gamla Uppsala.
The investigations carried out in Gamla Uppsala in recent years reveal a picture of a Viking Age society characterised by different social strata and roles.
