När historien blir ett slagfält
Join us for the launch of Museer och omstridda kulturarv with Fedir Androshchuk, former director of Nationalmuseet för Ukrainas historia in Kyiv.
In the book, Androshchuk examines the role of cultural heritage in shaping national identity and how history and museums can be used and misused in political propaganda.
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Androshchuk was effectively forced to move into the museum to save its collections. Against the backdrop of the invasion, he conducted the research project Sverige och Ukraina i museal samlingshistoria och utställningsnarrativ at Statens historiska museer from 2023 to 2025. The project and the book were funded by Torsten Söderbergs Stiftelse.
Drawing on both Ukraine and Sweden, Androshchuk sheds light on their shared cultural heritage and describes how museum staff have contributed to knowledge of the two countries’ history and culture.
Fedir Androshchuk holds a PhD in archaeology. In 2023, he was awarded the European Archaeological Heritage Prize “for his outstanding efforts to protect Ukraine’s archaeological heritage, raise awareness and safeguard collections during wartime.
