Medeltida sigill
What purpose did medieval seals serve? In the Middle Ages, seals were more than a form of identification. They linked documents to specific individuals, asserted authority and verified an owner's presence.
The relationship between a personal seal and its owner followed clear conventions: the seal depicted the owner in an idealised form. However, it took a long time before seals began to be used by groups or collectives, such as guilds or orders.
In this talk, Wilhelm Ljungar, a doctoral student in history, discusses medieval seals, their use and imagery, giving us a unique insight into how medieval organisations viewed themselves and their members.
