Israel Galván – La Edad de Oro

The flamenco world’s leading avant-garde artist Israel Galván is back at Dansens Hus! La Edad de Oro has become a cornerstone of Galván’s repertoire and left its mark around the world. Two decades after its premiere, you can finally see it again.

In “La Edad de Oro”, Galván does not merely search for flamenco’s roots – he lays them bare.

Together with María Marín and Rafael Rodríguez, Galván establishes an onstage dynamic that deepens the work’s rigorous character. Stripping away the decorative and focusing on the essential creates a raw presence in which body, voice and strings come together in an unfiltered expression.

The performance is not nostalgic, but a contemporary response to a lost form – a flamenco that burns, breaks boundaries and moves us.

“For me, it’s about surrendering to the silence, with the memory of the guitar and the singing. The dancer’s body is a symphony of movements and a musical instrument. ‘Edad de Oro’ is my personal dance laboratory.” – Israel Galván

Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes

Israel Galván is a pioneering Spanish choreographer and dancer, born in Seville into a family of flamenco dancers. Following classical flamenco training, he has reshaped flamenco dance into a contemporary expression that crosses boundaries since his debut with ¡Mira! / Los zapatos rojos (1998). His work is characterised by a physical deconstruction of flamenco, drawing on movement elements from bullfighting, football, activism and queer performance.

Galván has received several international honours, including the Premio Nacional de Danza (Spain), Bessie Performance Award (New York) and National Dance Award for Exceptional Artistry (UK). In 2016, he was appointed Officier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France. He also appears in the Netflix series Move and is an associate artist at Théâtre de la Ville in Paris.
