Föredrag: Processionsvagnen
In this lecture, Helga Janse, curator for Asia at Världskulturmuseerna, discusses one of the museums’ treasures: an enormous Japanese processional float.
A project is currently under way to examine and conserve the float, with the aim of one day putting it on display for visitors again. The float was purchased in Tokyo in 1884 by Hjalmar Stolpe during Vanadisexpeditionen and shipped to Sweden in no fewer than 25 crates.
By searching historical sources, we have now found new clues about which festival the float was used in. The source material also offers a fascinating insight into Japanese society during the turbulent years around the early Meiji period.
