After a short European tour in 2023 (with sold-out shows in London and Paris) and later shows in South America and Japan, 90s band Codeine is returning to play a dozen shows in support of its lost album Dessau, recorded in 1992 but released relatively recently by the archival record label Numero Group. Remastered vinyl editions of the band’s original records are also being released on Sub Pop and Glitterhouse.

These will be Codeine’s first-ever shows in Turkey, Sweden and Norway, as well as their first-ever shows in several cities in Belgium, France, Germany and Italy.

With the release of Frigid Stars LP (1990), Codeine largely invented on its own what would later come to be called “slowcore”. The album came half a decade before influential records by related bands such as Low and Duster. Codeine’s slow, elegant songs carry lyrics that portray depression and dissociation in an unsettlingly quiet way — a feeling of estrangement from oneself and reality.
