På åsens topp – en vandring runt Johannes kyrka

Historically, the high Brunkebergsåsen ridge divided Norrmalm into two parts. Let’s climb the steps from Kungsgatan to the top of the ridge. The difference in elevation is still noticeable in the streets around Johannes cemetery.

The people of Stockholm have changed the geography around the old ridge, and few areas of the city have changed character as dramatically over the past 150 years. From the worst imaginable slums to a bourgeois oasis in the late 19th century. The area has a fascinating history, and many well-known people have connections to it, not least in the world of literature.
