Vaxholms Fästnings historia sträcker sig tillbaka till 1500-talet då riskföreståndare Svante Nilsson Sture lät resa ett blockhus på ön i sundet Oxdjupet. Snart gav konung Gustav Vasa i uppdrag att bygga en fästning på platsen, vilket skulle visa sig vara ett smart drag.
Efter lång och gedigen tjänst raserades fästningen för att ge plats åt ett nytt kastell, vilket är den anläggning som går att besöka i dag. Kastellet inhyser museum, restaurang och övernattning.
Vaxholms Fästnings Museum berättar om skärgårdsförsvaret under en tidsperiod om 500 år. Här finns bland annat utställningar om hur livet på kastellet var och om handelns betydelse för Sverige.
